India's Car Market Booming yet Customers Show Little Love for Tata Nano

Sometimes being cheap and cheerful just isn’t enough. Production delays, land debates and questions over occupant safety are killing the Tata Nano faster than an unexplained engine fire. India’s people car is struggling in spite of the nation’s booming car market and a low asking price of just US$2,900, half of what its nearest rival costs.
With economic growth at a staggering 9% per annum and a 22% year-to-date increase in car sales, Tata must have felt it was onto a sure thing. Things started out good, with 200,000 advanced orders for the sub-subcompact before its 2009 launch.
However, sales have been flagging these past four months with the Indian carmaker selling just 509 Nano’s in November, down from 9,000 in July.
India’s bestselling car is the US$6,200 Maruti Suzuki Alto. With a bigger engine, more spacious interior and longer track record than the Nano, many buyers prefer the Alto in spite the fact it costs more than twice as much. With 30,000 units sold in November, the numbers seems to agree. Even the US$7,800 Hyundai i10 is outselling Tata’s golden child.
Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, explains why the Nano is falling behind its more pricey competitors:
"The bottom of the pyramid continues to be where the action is. But the aspirations of people are moving up. People want to jump into something more substantial.”
At the time of its launch, the Nano was unavailable and dealerships and many customers were turned off by the inability to inspect / test drive the vehicle before placing an order.
It’s uncertain whether the Nano’s poor domestic sales will affect Tata’s move into foreign markets such as Europe and South America.
The four door, five seat Nano is the branchild of Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata. His brief was for a car that cost just 100,000 rupees (US$2,200) and would appeal to those who previously could only afford a motorcycle.
However, the forced closure of one of Tata’s factories in West Bengal and the subsequent relocation caused delivery delays and the spontaneous combustion of several Nano’s in the past have dampened the Nano’s reputation.
Darius Lam, an analyst at J.D. Power & Associates, remarks on the latter:
“The company has just mishandled the whole thing. First, the company said it was no big deal. Then, it was just some foreign objects.”
Like many in the automotive community, Mr. Lam does not believe Tata has done enough to investigate the cause of the fires and reassuring the public that it’s been properly addressed.
To count the flagging sales, Tata is allowing buyers to take immediate delivery of their Nano from the showroom and opening new locations in smaller cities. The car’s warranty has been extended from 18 months to four years, while the company is stressing the Nano’s power and durability to assuage the public’s grievances.
A company insider has stated that Nano sales are back on the rise. Company spokesman Debasis Ray elaborates:
“As we began open sales, our learning was that, even though the Tata Nano is affordable for thousands of customers who do not own a car, it is still a significant decision to enter the four-wheeler category.”
It is believed that many of the Nano’s 71,000 owners are happy with their car, citing its performance, 41 mpg fuel economy and spacious interior as the main reasons for purchasing it other than the low price.
Even so, many analysts believe that unless the brand makes further strives to improve safety and public perception, the Nano will still lag behind its Korean and Japanese competitors in the Indian market.

2011 BMW X3 gets M Sports Package and New Inline-Six Petrol and Diesel Engines

The lightly refreshed Coupe and Convertible versions of the 1-Series aren't the only new BMW models unveiled today as the Bavarian automaker also announced the introduction of an M Sports Package and two new engines for the latest X3 crossover, which was first shown in July.
Beginning from Spring 2011, buyers of the new X3 will be able to order an M Sports package that adds some sporty aesthetic touches inside and out, and revised suspension tuning. In detail, the kit consists of an aerodynamics package with unique front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a roof spoiler. Other exterior amenities include the high-gloss shadow line trim for the side window surrounds and roof rails, chrome tailpipes and 19-inch or optionally, 20-inch alloy wheels. As an exclusive option in conjunction with the M Sports package, buyers can opt for a Carbon Black metallic paintwork.
Inside, there are sports seats with exclusive Pearlpoint fabric/leather upholstery, an M leather-trimmed steering wheel with multifunction buttons including a Cruise Control button, door sills with the M logo and an M footrest.
The roof lining in anthracite, brushed aluminium interior trim, an M shift lever (only for the X3 xDrive 20d with manual transmission) and a stainless steel insert in the loading sill, round off the interior upgrades.
Performance improvements are limited to the sports suspension calibration across the range and on the X3 xDrive35i, a Sports automatic transmission, steering wheel shift paddles and variable sports steering, including Servotronic.
The M Sports package will be available for all engine versions of the new X3.
In addition to the sport kit, BMW also announced the presentation of two new powerplants for the European market X3. These are the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six petrol with 258HP and 310 Nm (228 lb-ft) for the X3 xDrive28i (the North American xDrive28i is powered by a 240HP unit), and 3.0-liter straight-six turbo diesel with 258HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of peak torque.
The petrol model completes the standard sprint in 6.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). Its average fuel consumption is 9.0 lt/100 km (26.1 mpg US) in the EU test cycle with CO2 emissions of 210 g/km.
The new X3 xDrive30d goes from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds en route to a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph), while returning 6.0 lt/100 km (39.2 mpg US) and 159 g/km.
Both engine variants of the X3 will go on sale in Europe next Spring.

Mild Updates for 2012 BMW 1-Series Coupe and Convertible

The recent presentation of the range-topping BMW 1-Series M Coupe has been followed up by the unveiling of the regular 2012 model year 1-Series Coupe and Convertible models. There are no mechanical changes for the updated models (the 135i received the N55 twin-scroll turbo engine in Spring 2010), with BMW turning its attention on some subtle design modifications and improved aerodynamics, as well as on refinements to various controls plus new exterior paint colors, upholstery and interior trim.
New exterior design accents are limited to the reworked headlights and rear lights with LED strips, fresh styles for the 17-inch alloy and 18-inch alloy wheels and the addition of two new paint finishes, Vermilion Red and Marrakesh Brown.
BMW's designers also re-sized the vertical ventilation slits in the front apron to channel air into the wheel arches and create what they describe as an “air curtain” or aerodynamic screening effect across the face of the front wheels. The Bavarian firm claims that the change significantly reduces drag in this area.
Inside, buyers of both the coupe and convertible models will be greeted by new interior trim features and upholstery options. In addition, BMW has added a new sports leather steering wheel with shift paddles and an M leather steering wheel, again with shift paddles, to the cars' options list.
Other changes include the new markings on the DSC button in the instrument panel as the letters DSC (Dynamic Stability control) have been replaced by a new international symbol, while the light control center and the climate control panel in the center console now feature a chrome edging.
In the U.S., the 1-Series Coupe and Convertible will continue to be offered with a choice of two powertrains, a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline six with 230HP and 200 lb-ft of torque for the 128i, and a 3.0-liter inline-six [N55] with a twin-scroll turbocharger delivering 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, for the 135i variants.
The 135i is equipped with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox or optionally with BMW’s 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT). For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-60 mph [96km/h] is accomplished with the standard 6-speed manual transmission in 5.1 seconds, while the DCT model completes the same sprint in 5.0 seconds.
A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains optional on the 128i. With this configuration the 128i Coupe runs 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, or 6.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.
The updated for the 2012 model year 1-Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in the States this Spring.
